Fantasy Movie

The Fantasy movie subgenre, which takes place in fictitious worlds and often features fantastical characters like gnomes, elves, and wizards, is related to fairy tales. The use of magic and supernatural beings is widespread in works of this genre. These movies are particularly well-liked by young adults and children. Some well-known examples are “The Hobbit” trilogy as well as “Spirited Away.”

Types of Fantasy Movie

Mythological Fantasy

These movies are set in a universe ruled by Greek and Roman gods, and the protagonists are based on heroes from Greek and Roman mythology. After the 1970s, there was a significant decline in the popularity of films belonging to this subgenre. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is a current example.

Contemporary Fantasy

This subgenre incorporates fantasy elements but sets them in the present day and age. The Harry Potter movies and The Chronicles of Narnia are two examples.

Fairy Tales

These films are more than adapted fairy tales written for use in Hollywood productions. In recent years, some of these films have featured both a sinister main storyline and an accompanying secondary storyline. Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast are two well-known examples.

Urban Fantasy

This is a very popular sub genre because it features aspects of fantasy that are blended into an urban setting. The story’s action must take place in a city, and it doesn’t matter if the setting is genuine or made up; the emphasis should be on the events there. The television show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the movie “Ghostbusters” are both good examples of this subgenre.

Dark Fantasy

A hostile world is the setting for stories that belong to the subgenre of fantasy known as “dark fantasy.” Some examples of this would be “Solomon Kane” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

High Fantasy

This subgenre, which is also known as epic fantasy, adds aspects of fantasy to a fictional setting, generally involving mythological creatures, battles, and romance. Other terms for this subgenre include high fantasy and epic fantasy. Numerous examples include “Game of Thrones” and “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.”

Myth

This subgenre is referred to as “stories that typically play a fundamental role in how society developed,” and some examples include the “origin story” for humanity and “the story of how existence came into being.” The Hero’s Journey idea developed by Joseph Campbell is usually utilized in the stories, and some of the characters may be gods, demigods, or humans with extraordinary abilities. Hercules and The Monkey King are two examples of such stories.

Sword and Sorcery Movies

This epic and heroic fantasy focuses on swords and magic and has parts from other epic and heroic fantasy types. Conan, the Barbarian, and Masters of the Universe are examples of this. Some of the above categories overlap, and a movie fits into more than one… Genres aren’t always clear, but that’s because they aren’t meant to be.
